If you or your business developed an innovative occupational health and safety solution or initiative over the last year you could be in the running for one of this year's Safe Work ACT Awards. Nominate now and get the recognition you deserve as one of the ACT's leaders in workplace safety.
Nominations for the 2012 WorkSafe ACT Work Health and Safety Awards open on 5 March 2012 and close on 18 May 2012.
Entries may be submitted by individual applicants or by organisations in any of the following categories:
1. Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System
a. Public Sector
b. Private Sector
2. Best Solution to an Identified Workplace Health and Safety Issue
3. Best Workplace Health and Safety Practices in Small Business
4. Best Individual Contribution to Health and Safety
a. A worker, such as a work safety representative, who does not have formal responsibility for WHS management as part of their duties
b. An outstanding contribution by an WHS manager or a person with responsibility for WHS as part of their duties
5. Most Successful Promotion of WHS in Workplaces
6. Best Workplace Health and Wellbeing Program
The winners of Categories 1 to 4 automatically qualify as the ACT's nominee for the national Safe Work Australia Awards.
The ACT WHS Awards is an annual awards scheme, designed to promote and recognise high standards of occupational health and safety in ACT workplaces.

Awards Ceremony
An awards ceremony will be conducted on Tuesday 16 October 2012 at the National Convention Centre, commencing at 12.30 pm and concluding at 3.00 pm. The ceremony will involve the announcement of award category winners and presentations by the Attorney-General, Mr Simon Corbell, MLA.

Awards Categories
1.BEST WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
a.Public SectorThis award recognises demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement of workplace health and safety through the implementation of an integrated systems approach.
b.Private SectorThis award recognises demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement of workplace health and safety through the implementation of an integrated systems approach.
2.BEST SOLUTION TO AN IDENTIFIED WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUE
This award recognises excellence in developing and implementing a solution to an identified workplace health and safety issue. Entries for this award may include a product solution, design/engineering innovation, a training program, awareness-raising activity or other risk control measure that reduces the risk of work-related injury and disease.
3.BEST WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY PRACTICES IN SMALL BUSINESS
This award recognises high standard workplace health and safety practices in small business. This may include, but is not limited to solutions to identified risks, an innovative and systematic approach to WHS management; or any other practice that has improved occupational health and safety performance in your business. This category is limited to small businesses that have less than 20 employees or full-time equivalents.
4.BEST INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTION TO WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY
This award recognises an individual (such as a health and safety representative who is not a management employee) whose contribution has made an exceptional difference to health and safety in their workplace.
a.An employee, such as a work safety representative who does not have formal responsibility for WHS management as part of their duties.
b.An outstanding contribution by an WHS manager or a person with responsibility for WHS as part of their duties.
5.MOST SUCCESSFUL PROMOTION OF OHS IN WORKPLACES
This award recognises achievements by a business in promoting occupational health and safety in workplaces.
6.BEST WORKPLACE HEALTH AND WELLBEING PROGRAM
This award is a proactive award and recognises the organisation that has developed and implemented the best workplace health and wellbeing program. It is promoted on the premise that a fit and healthy employee is a more productive and happy employee. NOTE: This category is sponsored by the Health Promotion Branch, ACT Health.

Judging Process
The judging panel for the Safe Work ACT Awards will comprise one judge nominated by an employer body, one judge nominated by UnionsACT and one judge nominated by the ACT Work Safety Commissioner. The judging panel:
