Safe Work ACT Awards 2010 Winners Announced
The ACT Attorney General, Mr Simon Corbell, announced the winners of the Safe Work ACT Awards 2010 at a function held at the National Convention Centre on Tuesday 12 October 2010. The awards are a highlight of Safe Work ACT Month, a month-long safety awareness campaign coordinated by WorkSafe ACT.
"The annual OHS awards provide recognition for the achievements of business, unions and individuals in the ACT in finding solutions to improve workplace safety and injury mangement", Mr Corbell said.
Thirty-four entries were received across six award categories ranging from small and large, private and public workplaces, and from industries including construction, health, hospitality and not-for profit.
"Regardless of whether they have received an award, all this year's entries contribute to making workpalces healthier and safer, Mr Corbell said".
The Excellence Award for 2010 was presented to James Bodsworth from Bovis Lend Lease. Mr Bodsworth beat a strong field of entries from both the public and private sector vying for the awards.
The Excellence Award was chosen from the category winners in recognition of outstanding achievement. Jim created a very simple strategy for plant operators on local Bovis sites to identify the location of underground utilities. When digging in proximity to underground utilities it was difficult to maintain visual contact with the system of identification previously used. Jim led a team that addressed this issue by designing a notification strategy that raised the visual cues to a level that was clearly visible to plant-operators in all weather conditions.
Jim's higly innovative yet simple solution to a hazard with potentially catastrophic consequences reflects his long-standing commitment to achieving excellence in the field of work health and safety.
